Sufferings of Christ

Sufferings of Jesus Christ! I am walking in on Holy Ground as I share about the sufferings of Jesus! It is too profound for the human mind to comprehend how the Holy God Almighty became a man and because of His great love suffered in His Life and on the Cross for our sins. “He (God) made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21) How can I even touch this pure and holy truth! Before the foundations of this world the plans were made and the Bible gives the story of the redemption of those who would repent and believe and put their trust in Jesus. I must let the scriptures themselves present the sufferings of Jesus because I am not worthy of dealing with this subject. Yet I have learned much in the past years about this and I feel led by the Holy Spirit to share these thoughts and scriptures.

Jesus was mocked, slapped in the face, spit on, blindfolded, betrayed, forsaken, hit, beaten on His face and head, scourged with a whip, lied about, falsely accused, stripped, a mocked, robe put on Him, crown of thorns crushed upon His head, a rod like a king put in His hand, His face was mutilated and bloody, His face black and blue from the blood vessels that burst when He prayed in agony, carried a large heavy cross He was crucified on, crucified like a criminal at a place called Calvary ‘the place of the skull, Golgotha, He was stripped of His garments, His hands and His feet nailed to the cross, the crowd at the cross looked on laughing and wagging their heads, If you are the Son of God come down from the cross, shed His Holy sinless Blood, for our sins He became sin for us and was forsaken by the Father so that He became our sin bearer and was stabbed with a spear in His side.

Jesus face (appearance) was marred more than any man.

Jesus had no splendor or beauty that we should desire Him.

Jesus was despised and rejected by men.

Jesus is a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

Jesus has borne our sickness and carried our sorrows and pains.

Jesus was wounded for our transgressions.

Jesus was bruised for our iniquities.

Jesus was oppressed and afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth.

Jesus was led as a lamb to the slaughter but opened not His mouth.

Jesus was taken from prison and from judgment.

Jesus was cut off from the land of the living.

Jesus was stricken.

Jesus made His grave with the wicked.

Jesus poured out His soul unto death.

Jesus was numbered with the transgressors.

Jesus bore the sin of many.

Jesus made intercession for the transgressors.

Jesus lived, He suffered for me.

Jesus did it all for me and I weep!

Jesus arose!

Jesus Christ lives!

Jesus I thank you.

Jesus You are my Savior and Lord of my life.

(Taken from Isaiah chapters 52 and 53)

“From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.” Matthew 16:21

“But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” Matthew 17:12

“And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.” Mark 8:31

“And He said to them, “Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He will suffer many things and be treated with contempt?” Mark 9:12

“The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.” Luke 9:22

“But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.” Luke 17:25

“He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” Luke 22:15

“Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” Luke 24:26

“He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day”     Luke 24:46

“To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.” Acts 1:3

“But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.” Acts 3:18

“Explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ,” he declared. Acts 17:3

“Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. Hebrews 2:17-18

“Although He was a Son, He learned obedience through what He suffered.” Hebrews 5:8

“He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” Hebrews 9:26

“Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate.” Hebrews 13:12

“Trying to determine the time and setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.” 1 Peter 1:11

“Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 1 Peter 1:18-19

“For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.” 1 Peter 2:21

“Who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.” 1Peter 2:23-24.

“For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit.”   1 Peter 3:17-18

“Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh.” 1 Peter 4:1.

“Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. Luke 13:33.

“I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to Myself.” This He said, signifying by what death He would die. John 12:32.

“I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” John 10:11.

“And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me; yet not My will, but Yours be done.” Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him. And having been in agony, He was praying more earnestly. And His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down upon the ground. When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.” Luke 22:41-46. “Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, except I drink it, Thy will be done.” Matthew 26:36-46.

“He was despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces, He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Surely He has borne (carried) our griefs and carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.” Isaiah 53:3-4

“Dear God I need you! Thanks for loving me and giving Jesus to die for my sins. As best as I know how I repent of my sins and turn to trust Jesus as my Savior. Wash me in the Blood of Jesus shed on the cross for my sins. Save me Jesus. I desire to know and follow You. I confess Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. I am not ashamed of Jesus. I love you Lord. In Jesus Name I pray.”

The complete study on “Suffering” is on the ‘Life Lessons A-Z’

You will notice that I have focused on the word ‘suffer, suffering, suffered etc. in this study. To expand it to consider all the suffering of God one would have to read the entire Bible. The sufferings of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit are give again and again in many different words describing the events. I can only pray that the Holy Spirit will open the eyes of our hearts to show us the sufferings Jesus carried for you and I.
