Jesus (Wine and a Woman)

In this column we continue our columns about Jesus and women. Here again we follow Jesus and His mother Mary.

This is a profound story of the first recorded miracle of Jesus.

“This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

What was this amazing miracle that Jesus did?

Jesus turned water into wine! This happened at a wedding celebration!

Let’s read the scripture and then I will make some comments.

John 2:1-12
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there.
Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.
And when they ran out of wine,
the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me?
My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”
Now there were set there six water pots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece.
Jesus said to them, “Fill the water pots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.”
And they took it.
When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine,
and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom.
And he said to him,
“Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”
This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.
After this He went down to Capernaum,
He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples;

John 4:46
So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine.

Several things I would like to point out.

One is that Jesus was at a wedding party with His mother, brothers and His disciples.

The public ministry of Jesus began with a wedding party.

Mary must have known of the power and miracle ability of Jesus.

She asked Jesus to do something that was not a necessity but to keep the bridegroom from being embarrassed.

These wedding parties normally went on for seven days. It seems on the third day they had run out of wine.

Jesus at first seemed to rebuke His mother and say “My hour has not yet come.”

His mother refused to be silent but pressed forward saying

“Whatever He says to you, do it.”

Jesus would not let His mother be embarrassed.

He gave instructions for the miracle to take place.

The word for “well drunk’ here is as follows:

methusko ^3182^ signifies “to make drunk, or to grow drunk” (an inceptive verb, marking the process or the state expressed in No. 1), “to become intoxicated,” .#

The ‘best’ wine is served at first, then the inferior. After much drinking the taste of the best wine is not appreciated as much when served.

Jesus made the best wine!

Whatever Jesus does is the best. Glory!

I want to keep the emphasis on Jesus and Mary.

Jesus did the best for His mother and worked His first public miracle at her request.

This shows the beauty of how much Jesus cared for Mary His mother and for women.

It also lets us see that Mary, a woman was traveling with Jesus during His ministry in Cana and then on with Him and the disciples in Galilee.

Today the risen Jesus will hear your prayer and bring to pass that which will Glorify God.

Don’t let that which seems impossible or untimely detour you from the miracle that you could have if you press on as Mary did.
