1988
I arrived on the Island of Guernsey which is located in the English Channel between France and England to carry the cross.
I discovered that the short beam of my cross had been broken in transport. I got some epoxy glue and tape and tried to tape it together so I could continue to carry it around this wonderful island country.
Soon my repair had fallen apart and I went into an auto garage to see if they could attach a metal bar to my cross so I could carry it. The workman there was shocked to see the cross. He couldn’t believe it – he told me to come back in an hour.
I left the cross and went to get something to eat, came back to find they had called the Guernsey Newspaper. A reporter had arrived to watch as my cross was repaired. The reporter wrote a big story that appeared in the newspaper the next day.
The cross repair became a tremendous witness on the island of Guernsey.
I will never forget how beautiful Guernsey is. Beautiful flowers, flowers, flowers everywhere.
Guernsey has to be perhaps the most flower-filled little country in the world!
