Syria

1997

Denise, my wife and I carried the cross in Damascus, Syria in 1997. It was a great joy and the people welcomed us in a wonderful way. Damascus is one of the oldest continually inhabited places on earth.

The people came out of their homes to greet us, crowds gathered along the streets and gave us food and drink and also many gifts to remember then. They were eager to hear the message of Jesus! No problem. We received only kindness and welcome.

Our wonderful driver, interpreter and friend Mohammed now has our white cross hanging on his taxi rear view mirror for all to see. What a good and honorable man.

We carried the cross in the ‘old city’ along the ‘street called Straight’ where Paul was converted to Jesus shortly after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection about 2,000 years ago. We took the cross to the Chapel of Ananias and to the church of Saint Paul where Paul was lowered down the wall in a basket to escape his enemies after his conversion.

I carried the cross in 1977 along the east side of the Sea of Galilee and then through the Golan Heights which is a part of Syria now occupied by Israel.

Damascus is a lovely, peaceful
and prosperous city.

God bless Syria!
