1997
This country ravaged by war for 30 years is now perhaps the most peaceful and hassle free in all of Africa. What a joy to spend almost two weeks here carrying the cross. The welcome has been tremendous as people greet us with smiles, waves and happiness. The people are hard at work building their new nation (independent since 1993).
The capital Asmara is 7,677 feet high and is mostly mountainous desert. The people are deeply interested in our mission both Muslim and church people. Many ask such profound questions as; “What is your message?” “Does Jesus speak to you? and how?” “Why do you carry the cross?” “What is the meaning of the cross?” “Can you tell me how to be a follower of Jesus?” Oh, how I love these people and they seem to appear from everywhere all along the roads and in the villages. Often crowds of children follow me and both men and boys want to carry the cross. God bless Eritrea, they welcomed us, they welcomed the cross!
