Christmas Island

2001

Should one want to see real nature and the wonder of it, Christmas Island is the place to go. Now don’t get me wrong. There is a large section of the island that has had the trees cut down and the land mined for minerals. However there is another section that remains untouched and still in its natural state. This island is a part of Australia located out in the Indian Ocean.

There are huge trees in the rain forest. However the wonder of Christmas Island is the millions of crabs! They are red, blue and yellow orange. They are crawling everywhere! Much of the forest floor is simply covered with them. It is a sight to behold. It is also a sad to see hundreds of the crabs crushed on the paved roads. There are so many crossing the roads that it is just not possible to miss them all.

We rented a car and I carried the cross around most of the island. My wife, Denise, and I had one of the most wonderful times ever of walking and exploring. There were few people outside the main population area so we had the forest almost to ourselves.

There were also many of the most beautiful and unique birds in the world.

I must not forget to people. We had great response and talked and prayed with many people. We stayed at the Mango Tree Hotel and had a refreshing time there.

Even the officials at the airport wanted to pose for photographs.
