From my diary: It was a beautiful sunshiny day in the Canary Islands as the ship slowly moved from Pier 16 at Las Palmas Harbor. On February 12, 2 p.m. 1973, I began my African walk, thousands of miles from people I knew.

What a glorious walk with the cross we had in Sicily. My wife, Denise and I were there in February and March during the tourist 'off season'.

Isim: We have driven about twelve hundred miles from Almaty, Kazakhstan to Siberia past Russian missile sites and atomic ranges, across an area not open to foreigners.

As the ship approached Antarctica the icebergs began to increase until we were completely surrounded by the white ice.

We took a total of three ship crossings on this trip and neither of us got seasick! A record for me! Thank you Jesus. Upon arrival Pastors Jamie and Christine Tonge of Emmanuel Church in Lerwick welcomed us.

We arrived by plane at the famous Indian Ocean vacation island of Seychelles. Seychelles is a popular tourist destination especially with people from the United Kingdom.

My first time to carry the cross in Serbia was when it was Yugoslavia and included what became many nations when communism fell from power. We had no problem with the government at that time and were welcomed by the people.

We arrived at the airport in Dakar. My wife, Denise and I carried the cross in and around the city of Dakar.

We crossed the border from England into Scotland at just about the end of our first month's walk in mid-October, and the winter weather was already sending in cold blustery rain.

With my wife, Denise, and our twenty-month old daughter Sophia we took a ferryboat to the Scilly Isles from Penzance in the Southeast of England near Land's End.
